The official manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 50.1, up from 49.8 in August, crossing the 50-point level that separates expansion from contraction. A separate private survey also showed manufacturing activity reaching a five-month high. Reuters reported that stronger industrial production and demand linked to the global artificial-intelligence boom contributed to the improvement, although weak consumer spending and the prolonged property downturn continue to weigh on the broader economy
